Surprise Shopping Spree for Academically Achieving Students in Philadelphia
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Philadelphia based non-profit Killebrew Kicks as he, in partnership with DTLR Community, treated a group of well-deserved students to a shopping spree.
So, a little backstory about Killebrew Kicks. The organization was founded by Lawrence Killebrew in 2019. Killebrew is a comedian and devoted sneaker-head. As a child, whenever he received a new pair of sneakers, it made him feel highly confident, and that’s a feeling he’s never forgotten. He wanted to give that feeling to the youth in need. Killebrew initially began giving away sneakers that he collected; however, that eliminated children who didn’t wear his same shoe size. After talking to a close friend about this problem, they suggested he purchase quality kicks for high-performing students to make them feel honored and celebrated. Hence, Killebrew Kicks was born.
I have covered several Killebrew Kicks events over the years, such as giveaways, celebrity basketball games, and even a movie theater buyout to treat a school to a screening of Black Panther II. The events are always full of surprises, and this time was no exception. We excitedly waited for the students to arrive, who were unaware of where they were going or why. They knew they were going on a trip, but not what was in store for them. To their delight, they were surprised with gift cards to shop for whatever they wanted while taking a break from their school day. Each student left happy with Down North Pizza (delicious, by the way!) and fresh gear to show off at school.
I have attached a few pictures from the last two shopping sprees. If you know of a group of students in the Philadelphia area that deserves to be honored or would like to donate to Killebrew Kicks, please visit https://www.killebrewkicks.com for more information.
